Disneyland Resort Offers Spectacular Summer Fun with Return of ‘Fantasmic!,’ ‘Tale of the Lion King’ and more

ANAHEIM, Calif. (May 26, 2022) – This summer, Disneyland Resort is the ideal place for family and friends to create lasting memories, enjoy exciting entertainment and delight in splendid dining together. On May 28, Disneyland Park will welcome home “Fantasmic!” to the Rivers of America and present a new staging of “Tale of the Lion King” at the Fantasyland Theatre.

Guests can also look forward to ongoing celebrations and limited-time experiences that will make this a sensational summer to remember, including new Celebrate Soulfully offerings and live music that honor Black culture and heritage during Black Music Month in June.

Extraordinary entertainment and milestone anniversaries

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, “Fantasmic!” – Disney’s longest-running nighttime spectacular – will once again ignite the night at Disneyland beginning May 28. In this beloved show, Mickey Mouse dreams he is the Sorcerer’s Apprentice and faces dastardly villains, including a 45-foot-tall, fire-breathing Maleficent dragon. Central to the magic of “Fantasmic!” are three mist screens, each 60 feet wide by 30 feet tall, that bring moments from beloved Disney stories to life on the Rivers of America.

Also on May 28, the theatrical production “Tale of the Lion King” will make its Fantasyland Theatre debut at Disneyland Park with new, original musical arrangements and choreography. A guest favorite when it opened in 2019, the show is narrated by a traveling troupe known as The Storytellers of the Pride Lands, who re-enact the tale of Simba, Nala, Mufasa, Scar, Timon and Pumbaa through live music and dance inspired by the cultural roots of this timeless story.

For a limited time, guests can bask in the nighttime magic of the “Main Street Electrical Parade” – which features an all-new, grand finale honoring the parade’s 50th anniversary – and the “Disneyland Forever” fireworks spectacular at Disneyland. Performing nightly at Disney California Adventure Park, “World of Color” immerses audiences in some favorite Disney and Pixar stories with powerful fountains that create an immense screen of water.

For a magical meal and entertainment experience, guests may choose to book dining packages or a dessert party, which include access to a reserved viewing area for a select spectacular.* Entertainment schedules and dining package information are available at Disneyland.com.

Disney California Adventure is also celebrating a special milestone – this year marks the 10th anniversary of the park’s major expansion in 2012, when the first guests strolled along the new Buena Vista Street and cruised down Route 66 in Cars Land. Since then, Disney California Adventure has continued to introduce more fun and thrills. Its newest immersive land, Avengers Campus, opened in 2021 and features experiences such WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure and Doctor Strange: Mysteries of the Mystic Arts.

Celebrate Soulfully experiences, including live music and dining

Following the introduction of Celebrate Soulfully at Disneyland Resort in February, guests are invited to continue the celebration with more experiences honoring Black heritage and culture:

  • When “Tale of the Lion King” returns on May 28, Troubadour Tavern at Disneyland will feature a new menu inspired by the show, including a chicken-coconut curry sweet potato and berbere-spiced popcorn. Guests and their prides will be able to commemorate Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “The Lion King” with a souvenir popcorn bucket featuring Simba, coming later this summer. Availability may vary throughout the summer season.
  • From June 1 to July 4, Disneyland Resort will highlight Black Music Month with daily live entertainment – celebrating music genres like doo-wop, Motown, funk, reggae and more – as well as specialty food and beverages at Disney California Adventure, the Downtown Disney District and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.
  • “The Soul of Jazz: An American Adventure,” a touring exhibit that illustrates the legacy and dynamic history of jazz, will be on display and complimentary to all guests at the Downtown Disney District from June 1 to July 4. Featuring Joe Gardner – musician, mentor and star of Disney and Pixar’s original animated film, “Soul” – the exhibit celebrates the different cultures and creators who influenced this ever-evolving genre.

All year long, guests can continue the festivities with experiences such as training with the Dora Milaje, the royal guard of Wakanda, at Avengers Campus and enjoying Creole cuisine at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen in the Downtown Disney District.

Limited-time experiences throughout the Disneyland Resort

From graduations and vacations to special occasions, guests will be able to take home their memories with the all-new Capture Your Moment by Disney PhotoPass Service. Available at Disneyland Park beginning as early as July 11, guests may reserve personalized, 20-minute photo sessions with a Disney PhotoPass photographer that capture the fun and excitement of their celebrations. More information is available and reservations will open soon on Disneyland.com.**

Also in June, fans of a galaxy far, far away can discover limited-time, Star Wars-themed experiences, character encounters and more across the resort – in addition to galactic adventures available year-round at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Tomorrowland in Disneyland. Limited-time offerings include the exhilarating Hyperspace Mountain, special Magic Shots from Disney PhotoPass photographers and otherworldly dining options.

Taking place on select nights in June at Disney California Adventure, guests can relive the “good-ol’ days” and show off their school spirit at the first-ever Disneyland After Dark: Grad Nite Reunion. The separately-ticketed event offers shorter wait times for some attractions, unique food and beverages, special character experiences, entertainment, themed merchandise and more.*** Details are available at Disneyland.com/GradNiteReunion.

Magic at the Downtown Disney District and Hotels of the Disneyland Resort

Featuring a diverse collection of casual restaurants, favorite snacking stops and shopping boutiques, Downtown Disney District will be the coolest spot for friends and family to dine and explore together this summer. Guests can get their game on at Splitsville Luxury Lanes, dance to nightly entertainment and more.

With so much to celebrate and discover this summer, guests can extend the magic with a stay at the Hotels of the Disneyland Resort, which offer convenient access to both theme parks (subject to valid park admission and park reservations), benefits and magical touches that only a Disneyland Resort hotel can provide. Overnight hotel guests can enjoy access to Disney California Adventure directly through Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa entrance and a new walkway coming soon to Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel – in addition to direct transport to Disneyland Park via convenient Monorail access for Disneyland Hotel guests.

Beginning later this summer, guests staying at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, the Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel will be able to enjoy uniquely Disney benefits, including early entry access and the ability to send select theme park purchases back to their resort hotel.

‘Tale of the Lion King’ Fact Sheet

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Beginning May 28, 2022, Disneyland Resort will present a new staging of “Tale of the Lion King” – a unique theatrical adaption of Disney’s “The Lion King” – at the Fantasyland Theatre in Disneyland Park. This live stage production introduces all-new set pieces, original musical arrangements and choreography, with every aspect of the show honoring and drawing inspiration from the cultural roots of this timeless story. “Tale of the Lion King” is one of the ways guests can Celebrate Soulfully at Disneyland Resort.

An instant hit with guests of all ages when it debuted in 2019 at Disney California Adventure Park, the show is narrated by a traveling troupe known as The Storytellers of the Pride Lands, who re-enact the tale of how a lion cub became a king through dialogue, song, dance and percussion. As guests rediscover Simba’s journey, they’ll enjoy unique arrangements of treasured songs, including “Circle of Life,” “Hakuna Matata” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.”

The show will run Thursdays through Mondays at the Fantasyland Theatre. Guests can check Disneyland.com or the Disneyland app for show times.

A closer look at ‘Tale of the Lion King’

·       The show is brought to life by an expanded cast of 20 actors, singers, dancers and drummers. Together, they form an ensemble called The Storytellers of the Pride Lands.

·       “Tale of the Lion King” is a story-theatre adaption of the beloved animated film. As the lead narrator Mwongozo recounts Simba’s journey, Storytellers embody the roles of King Mufasa and his brother Scar; young Simba and Nala; and jokesters Pumbaa and Timon.

·       Disney Live Entertainment designed new costumes and hairstyles for the ensemble dancers. The new costumes are elaborately designed with inspiration from the story, with details including vibrant colors, layering fabrics and African-styled headwear.

·       At the back of the stage is a large screen that sets the mood for each scene with original media created specifically for “Tale of the Lion King.” The screen serves as an additional storytelling device that supports the tale being shared on stage by the ensemble of Storytellers.

·       Choreographed by brothers Kevin and Marcel Wilson, this all-new staging of “Tale of the Lion King” incorporates exciting styles of dance such as African, house, stepping, jazz funk and contemporary.

·       Among the show’s musical arrangements is an innovative mashup of Simba’s energetic song “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and Scar’s stirring warning “Be Prepared.”

·       With Swahili as the most popular language of Sub-Saharan Africa and spoken by approximately 50 million people, select Swahili dialogue and lyrics are interweaved into this theatrical production.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (June 10, 2022) – The big blue world beckons once again as “Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!” debuts June 13 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. The freshly reimagined return of this popular stage show invites guests into the undersea setting that charmed audiences around the world in the Disney and Pixar smash-hit animated film, “Finding Nemo.”

The fully updated, 25-minute show immerses audiences in the story of Marlin and Nemo – an overprotective clownfish father and his curious son – through a dazzling production that combines music, puppets, dancers and animated backdrops. “This show incorporates many of the songs from the original musical, as well as amazing puppetry and live performers that fill the stage,” said show director James Silson, Disney Live Entertainment.

A Whale of a Tale
This underwater adventure is a reimagined retelling of Disney and Pixar’s “Finding Nemo: The Musical,” which debuted at the theme park in 2007 and ran for more than 13 years. As in the original production, Marlin and Nemo each go on a separate journey that ultimately teaches them how to love and understand each other better. Except in this algae-friendly adaptation of that beloved tale, the storytellers are a group of fish living at the Marine Life Institute.

Visually Inventive Storytelling
The 1,500-seat Theater in the Wild transports guests to an undersea world through innovative special effects, sound and lighting, and the theatrical puppetry of Michael Curry, who co-designed the richly detailed character puppets seen in the Broadway version of Disney’s “The Lion King.” Main characters such as Marlin, Nemo and Dory are represented by live performers operating animated puppets. Some puppets are larger-than-life – such as Crush, the cool sea turtle, who is nearly the size of a car.

In addition to a new script, the show features new set pieces and a custom LED video wall that visually extends the physical sets on stage – including a 32-foot-long sunken submarine. “We’ve taken a new approach to the set for ‘Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!’,” said art director Matt Fiuza, Disney Live Entertainment. “We were inspired by 3D cut paper art and sculptures as we developed the scenic in the show. Our team had such an exciting time looking at our tank set through this brand-new lens of this watercolor sculpture aesthetic.”

“Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!” will be performed multiple times daily at Theater in the Wild at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. To experience the show, guests need both a valid park admission and a park reservation for Disney’s Animal Kingdom on the same date. For more information, guests can visit DisneyWorld.com.

New and Returning Entertainment Continues to Delight
“Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!” is just one of the many recently returning and soon-to-debut entertainment offerings for guests at Walt Disney World. Other returning experiences include “Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue” set to debut June 23, 2022, at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, and the “Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade” which returned in March at Magic Kingdom Park. Later this year, the iconic “Fantasmic!” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will once again dazzle guests with a new show sequence and technical enhancements. As the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary celebration continues throughout 2022, welcoming back fan-favorite entertainment is one of the many ways Disney continues to add even more magic to the guest experience.

First ship in Disney Cruise Line fleet expansion will offer new ways to enjoy the magic of Disney at sea

CELEBRATION, Fla. — When the Disney Wish sets sail in summer 2022, families will discover a mesmerizing new world created especially for them: a celebration of Disney’s rich legacy of enchanting storytelling that brings to life the fantastical worlds and beloved characters at the heart of Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars adventures like never before.

Families will embark on a splashtacular adventure with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse aboard the first-ever Disney attraction at sea; revel in a royal celebration during a theatrical dining experience with “Frozen” friends; team up with the Avengers on a Marvel cinematic dining adventure; and travel to a galaxy far, far away in a first-of-its-kind Star Wars experience on board a Disney ship.

“With the Disney Wish, we’re continuing our tradition of delivering the most magical and relaxing vacations at sea, combining legendary service and entertainment with imaginative storytelling and all the care you expect from a Disney vacation,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “Our newest ship will celebrate everything that families love about sailing with us, from the incredible dining experiences and character interactions, to dazzling shows and the crew’s thoughtful attention to detail. We can’t wait to welcome our guests aboard the Disney Wish as we expand the reach of our world-class fleet.”

The Disney Wish will sail its maiden voyage — a five-night cruise to Nassau, Bahamas, and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay — on July 14, 2022, followed by an inaugural season of three- and four-night cruises to the same destinations from Port Canaveral, Florida.

Wish Upon A Star

The Disney Wish will feature a brand-new, distinctly Disney design concept inspired by timeless tales of wishes come true. The motif of enchantment — a theme found at the heart of so many beloved Disney stories — will manifest in wondrous ways throughout the ship, from the magical forest setting of the Walt Disney Theatre to storybook-inspired staterooms to the fairytale castle-inspired Grand Hall, where a dazzling wishing star descends from the shimmering chandelier above.

“Daring to dream even bigger, our Imagineers are creating a breathtaking new world of enchantment aboard the Disney Wish,” said Laura Cabo, portfolio creative executive, Walt Disney Imagineering. “This motif provides the perfect platform to infuse Disney storytelling into every aspect of the design, giving the Disney Wish its own unique personality and a completely new look unlike anything else at sea.”

To “Swim”-finity and Beyond

Disney Cruise Line will take fun in the sun to the next level on board the Disney Wish with a brand-new family water attraction and three themed districts that offer dedicated space for families, children and adults alike.

Guests will be immersed in “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” animated shorts aboard the first-ever Disney attraction at sea, AquaMouse. Complete with show scenes, lighting and special effects, and splashtacular surprises, this wild water ride is sure to delight everyone in the family as they zig, zag and zoom through 760 feet of winding tubes suspended high above the upper decks.

Families will have more pools, more deck space and more dining than ever before in an expansive district themed to Mickey and friends. In addition to AquaMouse, the area will feature six pools — spaciously staggered among tiered decks and surrounded by lounge chairs — and a fresh take on quick and casual fare with a festive character twist.

Little ones will delight in an all-new Toy Story-themed district designed especially for families with toddlers and young children. This whimsical water wonderland will include a splash zone, wading pool, family waterslide and smoothie bar.

Adults will indulge in sun-drenched serenity at Quiet Cove, a peaceful refuge dedicated to lounging, sipping and soaking. Set away from the bustle of family activities, this secluded adults-only district will feature a luxurious infinity pool, poolside bar and chic cafe.

Prepared and Served with Flair – A Culinary Cabaret

With the debut of three brand-new family dining concepts ranging from theatrical entertainment to cinematic adventure to sophisticated elegance, dinner on board the Disney Wish will be so much more than a meal – it will be a chance to interact with favorite Disney stories in exciting new ways that only Disney Cruise Line can cook up.

Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure is Disney’s first “Frozen”-themed theatrical dining experience that will bring the world of Arendelle to life through immersive live entertainment — featuring favorite characters like Elsa, Anna, Kristoff and Olaf — and world-class cuisine infused with Nordic influences.

Worlds of Marvel is the first-ever Marvel cinematic dining adventure, where guests will play an interactive role in an action-packed Avengers mission that unfolds around them, complete with a worldly menu inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

1923, named for the year The Walt Disney Company was founded, is an elegant celebration of the company’s legacy, paying homage to the golden age of animation and offering a tasteful tribute to its Californian heritage with dishes inspired by the state’s unique fusion of cultural flavors.

In addition to elaborately themed, upscale restaurants, the Disney Wish will offer a variety of dining options ranging from quick bites, casual dining and 24-hour room service to specialty treats, gourmet cafes and premium dining exclusively for adults.

A Whole New World of Family Entertainment

Disney Cruise Line is combining innovative design and technology to create immersive entertainment environments that will surround guests in storytelling in new and unexpected ways on board the Disney Wish.

The Grand Hall will evolve from a fairytale gathering space into an environmental theater through the magic of built-in special effects and the first-ever atrium stage on a Disney ship. Dedicated shows and interactive entertainment will come to life all around the hall, putting guests front and center as they play a special role in the magic.

A Trove of Untold Treasures Exclusively for Adults

Adults aboard the Disney Wish will escape, relax, dine and play in more ways than ever with exclusive venues and entertainment tailored just for them, featuring elevated interpretations of Disney stories through sophisticated theming that ranges from subtle inspiration to full-scale immersion.

For the first time on a Disney ship, guests will embark on a space-jumping tour of the Star Wars galaxy at Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge, a high-end bar styled as a luxurious yacht-class spaceship. This richly themed, immersive experience will be reserved for adults every evening, offering interactive tasting experiences and signature beverages inspired by destinations such as Batuu, Tatooine and Mustafar.

Aboard the Disney Wish, guests will savor gourmet meals and exceptional beverages at Palo Steakhouse, Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement and The Rose, an upscale suite of epicurean excellence exclusively for adults, inspired by the elegant icons of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Beauty and the Beast.”

  • Palo Steakhouse is an evolution of the Palo restaurant that Disney cruisers know and love, now combining the relaxed sophistication of authentic Italian dining with the classic refinement of a modern steakhouse in a genteel setting inspired by Cogsworth, the tale’s majordomo-turned-enchanted-clock.
  • Enchanté will offer the most luxurious dining experience on board, featuring a gourmet menu crafted by three-Michelin-starred Chef Arnaud Lallement. This romantic and intimate venue will evoke the dazzling spirit of the film’s candelabra maitre d’, Lumiere.

Most of the ship’s 1,254 staterooms will offer an ocean view — including 877 (70%) with a spacious verandah — and there will be 451 connecting doors that adjoin rooms to accommodate larger families.

The Disney Wish will elevate the concierge experience with more than double the number of premium concierge staterooms and suites, including Disney’s first-ever staterooms located above the bridge, boasting floor-to-ceiling windows that reveal breathtaking ocean views overlooking the bow of the ship. An exclusive lounge with private sun deck will be the perfect place for concierge guests to relax, sip a cocktail and enjoy a premium level of dedicated service throughout the voyage.
